The Iowa men's basketball team thought that they deserved a number two seed somewhere in this year's NCAA Tournament. On Sunday evening, Fran McCaffery's squad got the news they'd been waiting to hear!

Iowa gets the #2 seed in the West Region and got their highest seed since 1987, the year that Iowa went all the way to the Elite Eight. The Hawkeyes first opponent will be Grand Canyon, who won the WAC Tournament title along with the WAC regular season title too. The Grand Canyon Antelope are coached by Bryce Drew, a name that any NCAA basketball fan should know. Drew played college ball at Valparaiso and hit one of the great last second shots in tournament history to beat Mississippi in 1998.

But this is 2021, and this Iowa team is primed for a deep NCAA run. And while no one will accuse Fran McCaffery or his players of looking ahead, I will look ahead! In the second round, Iowa would face the winner of Oregon vs VCU. A trip to the Elite Eight could feature a matchup against #3 seed Kansas. And lurking at the top of the West Region is #1 seed Gonzaga.

The Zags have already topped Iowa once this season, a 99-88 win in South Dakota back in December of 2020. Both teams have gotten much better since then. Heck, Gonzaga hasn't lost a game all year! What an amazing matchup that would be with a trip to the Final Four on the line!

But first thing's first! Beat Grand Canyon! Game time if 5:25 p.m. on Saturday at Farmer's Coliseum in Indiana. GO HAWKS!
