Green Square Meals Feeding Three Times The People
Volunteers with Green Square Meals in downtown Cedar Rapids are feeding three times more people in need than usual, and organizers say it is tied directly to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
KCRG reports that because of the increased demand, food is now served in to-go containers. Organizers say that normally 80 to 100 people come in to eat each night. But now those numbers how grown to nearly 250 meals out the door each night. That increased demand is leading to some issues.
Right now organizers say that they have enough food to get through this week and next week. After that? They say they're not sure what will happen. They may have to get creative with the food that they still have left. Organizers say they aren't sure how much local food banks could help since they are also seeing an increase in demand.
Volunteers with Green Square Meals are seeking donations. If you would like to help, you can drop off supplies or food donations at 605 2nd Ave. SE.
