The Marion Fire Department is seeking to hire six additional volunteer firefighters. Applications are being accepted now through July 30.

If you are looking to make a positive contribution to the community, helping your neighbors and gaining new skills, consider applying to be a volunteer firefighter.

This volunteer job is not for everyone. You would need to possess physical stamina and mental strength. Volunteer firefighters assist career firefighters and provide critical support at structure fires and other large incidents when available.

The Marion Fire Department is a combination fire department made up of both career and volunteer/ paid-on-call firefighters. While career firefighters handle the majority of the daily calls for service, both groups are essential to Marion’s operations.

To qualify, candidates need to hold a high school diploma or the equivalent, and a valid Iowa driver's license.

Other qualifications required include:

  • Living within the City of Marion or Marion Township
  • Passing a series of background checks (criminal, sex offender, drug screening and driving record)
  • Passing a pre-employment physical exam

You may also consider checking out the Marion Fire Departments Citizens' Fire Academy. The academy includes both classroom instruction and hands-on experiences ranging from fire response to rescue operations, emergency medical services to fire prevention. The academy will occur every Monday night from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 19 through Oct. 14, 2019.
