It may have gotten cut a bit shorter than fans hoped come NCAA tournament time, but the excitement the Iowa Hawkeye men's (and women's) basketball teams created in the state this past season cannot be denied.

One of the biggest reasons for that on the men's side is a player who had his jersey number retired by the University of Iowa in addition to winning enough Player of the Year awards to count on two hands. The big bummer in all this was that more fans couldn't be there to experience it all in person.

According to Saturday Tradition and Iowa's News Now, an awards ceremony, via Zoom, will take place this Saturday, May 1 prior to the football team's spring practice. The practice is open to the public, with face coverings required.

From 9:30 to 11 a.m. the spring practice will be held. The basketball team, coming off a 22-9 season, will be honored and speeches will be given by Garza, basketball coach Fran McCaffery and more, and at this virtual ceremony, Garza will be presented with his Naismith Player of the Year trophy. Garza is surely bound for the NBA as a high draft pick and since an in-person recognition ceremony has not been planned, this may be one last chance for Hawkeye fans to see him off. The Iowa women's basketball team, and All-American Caitlin Clark, will be recognized at approximately 11:30 a.m when the open practice concludes. The practice is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

It's also a chance to catch a glimpse of Iowa football heading into their upcoming season. A pandemic-shortened 2020 season, including the cancelation of a trip to the Music City Bowl, has fans hoping to see the team bounce back coming into the 2021 season.
