FRYfest Canceled For 2020

The 12th annual edition of a summer festival to celebrate the late Hayden Fry's accomplishments and the naming of a street after him at the first event in 2009, as well as honor him in general as legendary coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes is canceled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It was going to be the first FRYfest since his passing last December at the age of 90.

Iowa's News Now posted a statement from FRYfest director Monica Nieves which said: "We were hopeful that FRYfest would be an opportunity to bring our community back together after a challenging summer of cancelations. The continued health concerns related to COVID-19 pandemic has forced our hand to cancel.”

FRYFest regularly features speeches from and autograph sessions with UI dignitaries including former athletes along with music, food, fun, and games and includes fireworks.

A Facebook post, seen below gives a small glimmer of hope of a smaller version of FRYFest happening.

Whether the fall sports season will even take place is still in question, as the Big Ten just announced its season, if there is one, will be shortened to 10 games and only include conference opponents (no game against Iowa State or Northern Iowa).

They expect to bring back all the FRYFest activities on September 3, 2021.
