Greyhound racing in Dubuque, Iowa could suffer thanks to a vote this week in Florida. That state on Tuesday voted to phase out greyhound racing by the year 2020. Florida is home to 11 of the 17 greyhound race tracks in the U.S.

The manager of the Dubuque Greyhound Park says that many tracks closing down could be bad news for the industry. With fewer tracks up and operating, the number of dog breeders will also decrease. That will make it more difficult for remaining tracks like Dubuque to get dogs.

Revenue at the Dubuque track could also be in trouble since many people come there to bet on the races at those Florida dog tracks.

The Dubuque Greyhound Park is currently operating on a subsidy from the Q Casino. That will last another three years. After that, the park will need to be self-sustainable. That might be impossible in greyhound racing starts to disappear.
