Eric Carle, creator of the multi-generational childhood favorite, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar,' has passed away at 91 years old, his family reported.

Carle passed away on Sunday at his summer studio in Northampton, Massachusetts as a result of kidney failure, according to his son, Rolf.

Over the course of his career, Eric Carle illustrated over 70 children's books, a career that didn't start until he was in his late 30's.

'The Very Hungry Caterpillar,' was published in 1969, and went on to sell over 55 million copies.

According to his publisher, Penguin Random House, Carle's books have sold 170 million copies.

Carle over the years said 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' is meant to be a story of hope for kids as they enter kindergarten.

The book is known for its pages of colorful illustration and its short story of only 224 words. It was translated into over 70 different languages.

Eric also is known for his illustrations in the 1967 children's book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" He illustrated the book for his friend who authored it, Bill Martin Jr.
