The Google vehicle recently made another trip to eastern Iowa, including downtown Cedar Rapids. Makes sense too, a lot has changed in the world over the past couple of years, so why not come by again and see what's up, right?

Well, one thing still has not changed: Google has censored something downtown. It's not a license plate or a business name. It's not an ad they don't want you to see. No, it's not a person, either. Well, not exactly a person.

It is, however, a fake person's face. Fake sounds so... crass? It's the face of a statue. But why blur it? Why blur a work of art? WHY?! Okay, I'm really not fired up about this, but I am curious.

The sculpture in question is known as the "Untitled statue". It appears to feature two kids holding hands, and it's at the corner of 1st Ave and 3rd Street. Take a look:

This photo was taken by the Google car later last year when they returned to Cedar Rapids. Now in the past, you'd be completely unable to make out the young woman's face. This time, however, there's a "hack" you can use to see her.

Simply go a block in either direction (north or south), turn around, and zoom in on the statue's face.

So there you have it, a way to "trick" Google! Which... is not necessary since there are zero reasons to hide the face, to begin with.

If you want unblurred faces, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, just a few blocks away on 3rd ave, has a couple of statues located outside that are sans-blur. But, the red-faced statue has no face, to begin with so, that's not really saying too much...

Up in Cedar Falls on Main St. (downtown), there's a similar situation. Just outside the Oster Regent Theater, there is a statue of a man operating a camera. We think it's a man anyways. Wouldn't know, can't see the face.

Google, always blurring the art! But hey, it's a good excuse to go outside and actually take a look.
