Consumer Safety Commission Tweets “Don’t Fill Plastic Bags with Gasoline”

As some gas stations in America are reporting outages fueled by panic-buying, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning Americans to only fill up containers approved to carry gasoline. The agency actually Tweeted at 9:09 AM on May 12:

Do not fill plastic bags with gasoline.

You would assume that this would be a no-brainer. But there’s also people who ingest packets of laundry detergent, thus inducing this plastic bag warning.

The panic-buying started after a ransomware attack shut down the Colonial Pipeline, which carries about 45% of all fuel used on the East Coast. The pipeline hopes to be operational by the end of the week. As of Wednesday morning, CNN reports that nearly 25% of all gas stations North Carolina were out of gasoline. In 2016, this same pipeline was shut down for 10 days and gas prices soared by 30-cents/gallon.

As of Wednesday morning in Iowa, the average price of gas in Black Hawk County is $2.83/gallon, according to AAA.  The average price in Linn County is also listed at $2.83/gallon.

The statewide average is $2.89 while the cheapest gas can be found in Western Iowa where it’s under $2.40/gallon.

One year ago, the average in the state was $1.76 in the state.
