If you're like me, the cans and bottles are really starting to pile up in your garage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's the perfect way to get rid of them and help two area organizations at the same time.

The Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival and F.E.I.D. (Financial Education and Interpersonal Development) are teaming up for the event this Saturday, May 9 at Lindale Mall.

According to a media release from the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival, bring your empty bottles and cans to the 1st Avenue side of Lindale Mall Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a Can Shed semi-trailer ready to be loaded up.

All the money will be split between the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival and the "Cans for College Program" at F.E.I.D., which supports post-high school education for youth in the community.

What do you do Saturday? Just pull up. That's it. Volunteers will grab the bottles and cans out of your trunk. Please put plastic bottles in one bag and aluminum cans in another. Stay in your vehicle, if possible, for this contactless event. Please note: No glass is being accepted.

Even though there won't be a 2020 Freedom Festival, you can still support future Freedom Festivals in another way... by purchasing commemorative buttons at all Cedar Rapids and Marion Hy-Vee Food and Drug Stores. Each button is $5, with $30 in savings with each button.

The Freedom Festival is also giving away five $100 gift cards from Hy-Vee. To enter that contest, post a picture of yourself wearing the 2020 button on the Festival's Facebook page by midnight on Memorial Day Monday, May 25. You must use the hashtag #freedomfestconnects to be eligible. Anyone who donates at least $10 to the festival via their website or Venmo account (@CRFreedomFestival) will receive a button and is eligible to win one of the Hy-Vee gift cards.
