The Iowa men's basketball team is getting ready to play the Duke Blue Devils as part of the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday night. The game will be nationally televised and be played at Madison Square Garden. While none of the current Iowa players were even born when Chris Street played at Iowa, you better believe they all know his name. Street's final game at Iowa was a road game at Duke on January 16th, 1993. Just three days later the Iowa basketball star died on the streets of Iowa City. Chris' parents, Mike and Patty Street, talked with the Des Moines Register about their memories of their son's final game.

Iowa would go on to lose that game at Duke 65-56. In a hard-fought and scrappy game, Street led the Hawkeyes with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Even Duke fans were impressed with the Iowa kid's tenacity and work ethic. Also during the Duke game, Street extended his record of consecutive free throws made, hitting numbers 33 and 34. It was a record that was tied by Jordan Bohannon. Jordan actually had a chance to break the record, but missed the next free throw on purpose. That is how much the memory of Chris Street means at Iowa.

The Iowa versus Duke game this week is now nearly 30 years removed from Chris Street. But you better believe that this team and Iowa fans everywhere will be thinking of him at some point during the game. Most likely during a tenacious rebound or a player diving on the floor to save a loose ball. That is how Chris Street played.
