UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids has announced a huge investment to better serve patients and keep hearts beating in the Eastern Iowa communities they serve.

KCRG reports on a $25 million project at the Helen G. Nassif Heart Center to expand and consolidate heart and vascular services. First, those two departments will be consolidated into one. There will be a second electrophysiology lab, while the vascular and interventional radiology labs will be relocated and expanded. Finally, a dedicated cardiovascular hybrid operating room.

Electrophysiology procedures correct issues with the heart’s rhythm. Vascular procedures treat problems affecting blood vessels. The new operating room will expand capabilities and improve patient outcomes.

UnityPoint-St. Luke's President and CEO Michelle Niermann said:

Our expansion announcement signifies our commitment to our patients and community in continuing to offer complex, specialized cardiovascular care. We’ve offered exceptional, advanced cardiovascular care for over 40 years, and this is our response to the growing number of patients seeking heart care and needing St. Luke’s unique expertise for advanced heart procedures

According to Corridor Business Journal, St. Luke’s Nassif Heart Center originally opened in 2000 and, at 98,000 square feet, is the largest and most comprehensive heart center in the area.

The most recent upgrades took place 5 years ago, with a $5 million project that renovated patient rooms and installed upgraded equipment.
