Cedar Rapids Fire Department Earns Prestigious Distinction
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department has just joined elite company among its peers, and rightfully so.
CRFD has become one of just five departments in Iowa to earn accreditation. It's an honor that comes from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International, and it's given to fire departments who show high commitment to self-assessment and achieving the best standards and practices in the industry.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department also passed a risk assessment evaluation on community hazards and fire facilities. These assessments are based on factors such as community demographics, population density and land and infrastructure limitations, as well as the department's resources, travel times, and response times based on those limitations.
Accreditation may sound like little more than a routine checkup for a fire department, but as mentioned, Cedar Rapids is only one of five in Iowa--and less than 250 in the U.S., to earn it. City manager Jeff Pomerantz said it's a vote of assurance and confidence from leadership in the firefighting community that we are in safe hands.
The departments earning accreditation will be re-evaluated every five years.
