An Open Letter About Wearing a Face Mask
I have finally come to the realization that my opinion really doesn't matter.
To paraphrase Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca, my opinion doesn't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy, mixed-up world.
So naturally I'm going to give you my opinion, even though it doesn't really matter.
It’s about wearing a face mask in public.
It is my opinion that in three months, we will all have a different perspective on this subject. What that perspective will be, well that really doesn’t matter either. What does matter is that it will be a perspective with three months of hindsight attached to it.
If 2020 has shown us anything, it's just how fast things can change in three short months.
Today it seems that wearing a mask has somehow become the latest sign of your political affiliations, your party loyalty, or your philosophy of life.
I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or Republican.
I don’t care if you chose not to wear a mask.
If you choose to use a mask, I respect that. And I appreciate you.
If you choose NOT to use a mask, I’m OK with that too.
I'm not a scholar nor a scientist. All I know is all I know.
For the record, yes, I’ll be wearing a mask in busy public places for the foreseeable future.
Using a mask is a good way to prevent the spread of germs. But others see it as a sign of weakness. So you see, the mask controversy is self-ignited.
The way I see it, our leaders didn’t ask us to storm the beaches of Normandy. That was a sacrifice our fathers and grandfathers made. We haven't come close to that kind of sacrifice in this current pandemic. This isn't about winning an argument. It's about dying for no reason.
So if the church you attend, or the store, or the job asks you to wear a mask and you choose not to, then don't attend. If you want to protest, do it. But do it peacefully.
And be prepared to deal with the consequences of your actions in three more months.
No one likes what’s going on. We're all ready for this to be over.
And I’m not just referring to the virus.
