Wednesday was a tragic day in southern Iowa. Two people were killed in the extreme southern part of the state in separate incidents.

The first accident happened Wednesday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m. in rural Appanoose County.

According to an accident report from the Iowa State Patrol, Roberta Leffler was traveling north on T-61 near 415th Street, north of Unionville, when she lost control of the Jeep Cherokee she was driving. The Iowa State Patrol says her vehicle struck the guard rail of a bridge before going into the air and rolling. Leffler, of Moravia, passed away at the scene. She was 50.

Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, a 6-year-old was killed while 41-year-old Justin Miller of Leon, Iowa was picking up a round hay bale with a front-end loader that had come off his truck and trailer. The Iowa State Patrol says that after picking up the bale along Lineville Road in Decatur County, Miller turned into a private drive where the child was hit, sustaining fatal injuries. The child hasn't been identified, pending notification of relatives.

On Tuesday night, another fatal accident happened in Decatur County. At approximately 6:15 Tuesday evening, 46-year-old Brian Kitt of Ankeny was killed when the UTV he was driving lost control and rolled on private property southeast of Leon, Iowa.
