U.S. Olympic Team Features One From Iowa, 12 From Wisconsin [PHOTOS]
The 2022 Olympic Winter Games are nearly here and Iowans will have a Cedar Rapids native to cheer for, while athletes from Wisconsin will be well represented during the 17 days of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China, and the 10 days of the Paralympic Winter Games in March.
Kevin Bolger is a cross-country skier whose hometown is Minocqua, Wisconsin. The 28-year-old will be competing in four different events: Sprint Freestyle, Sprint Classic, 1.5-kilometer Sprint Classic, and the 1.5-kilometer Sprint Freestyle. This is Bolger's first Olympic games.
Alex Cavallini is a goalie on the women's Ice Hockey team. The 30-year-old is a native of Delafield, Wisconsin, and was a member of the U.S. women's team that won the gold medal at the 2018 Olympics. In 2009, she became the first female ever drafted in the USHL. She was chosen by the Chicago Steel.
Brianna Decker is a forward on the women's Ice Hockey team. The 30-year-old native of Dousman, Wisconsin will be playing in her third Olympic games. She was part of the silver medal team in 2014 and the gold medal U.S. squad in 2018.
Matt Hamilton is on the U.S. Curling team. The 32-year-old whose hometown is McFarland, Wisconsin will compete in the Men's Team and Mixed Doubles events. Hamilton is making his second Olympic appearance, having won the gold during the Men's Team event in 2018. He finished sixth in Mixed Doubles.
Becca Hamilton, Matt's sister, is also on the U.S. Curling team. The 31-year-old from McFarland is also a 2-time Olympian. Becca and Matt finished 6th in Mixed Doubles at the 2018 Games. Becca was also part of the women's team that finished 8th.
Amanda Kessel is a forward on the women's Ice Hockey team. The 30-year-old native of Madison, Wisconsin will be competing in her 3rd Olympics. She was a member of the team that won the silver medal in 2014 and gold in 2018. Amanda's brother, Phil, has played in the NHL since 2006.
Timothy LeDuc is in Pairs Figure Skating at the Beijing Olympics. The 31-year-old native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa was bitten by the skating bug while watching the 2002 Olympics. A school field trip to the ice arena was the first time he stepped on the ice. He started private lessons just before turning 14.
Timothy and partner, Ashley Cain-Gribble of Texas, started competing together in 2016. They are both appearing in their first Olympic games.
Nina Roth is on the women's Curling team. The 33-year-old from McFarland, Wisconsin qualified for her 2nd Olympics. She was part of the women's team that finished 8th in 2018.
David Samsa will compete in Wheelchair Curling. The 56-year-old native calls Suamico, Wisconsin home. Samsa will be appearing in his first Paralympic Winter Games, which take place in Beijing from March 4 to 13.
Gus Schumacher will be competing in the Sprint Classic and Team Relay in Cross-Country Skiing. The 21-year-old native of Madison, Wisconsin will appear in his first Olympic games.
John Shuster competes on the Men's Curling team and in Mixed Doubles. The 39-year-old's hometown is Superior, Wisconsin. He will be competing in his 5th Olympic games. Shuster won the bronze medal on the men's team in 2006, 10th place with the men's team in 2010, 9th place on the men's team in 2014, and was part of the gold medal-winning team in 2018.
Jordan Stolz is a speedskater. The 17-year-old from Kewaskum, Wisconsin will compete in speedskating in both the 500 and 1000 meters. They will be his first Olympic appearances.
Matthew Thums will compete in Wheelchair Curling in the Paralympic Winter Games from March 4 to 13. The 45-year-old calls Weston, Wisconsin home. It will be his first Olympics.
