2 Florida Kids Stole Their Mom’s Car After She Grounded Them

Authorities in north Florida were surprised to discover a 10-year-old behind the wheel when they pulled over a stolen vehicle this week.

Officers had a report of a stolen white sedan, and that prompted them to conduct a "high-risk traffic stop" when they spotted it driving down Interstate 75 just before 4am, near Alachua.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle had been reported stolen out of North Port, a city over 200 miles away.

Alachua County Sheriff's Office said that when they conducted the traffic stop, officers watched as a 10-year-old boy got out of the driver's seat, and his 11-year-old sister exited the car.

“It was learned that both children were upset with their mother because she took away their electronic devices, which is believed to have been done because they were not using them appropriately,” the sheriff’s office post reads.

After speaking with the children, deputies determined that nobody had mistreated them in their home. Their mother drove nearly three hours to pick up the children, and declined to press charges on them.

The children weren't jailed after the incident since the mom didn't want to press charges. Because they were her the children of the car owner, and the owner didn't want to press charges, the only “crime is a criminal traffic violation and a juvenile will not be accepted into the department of juvenile justice for misdemeanor criminal traffic,” the sheriff’s office said.
