When you think "drunkest this or that in Iowa," what county do you envision doing the most drinking?

Well, I was surprised to learn, and I bet you will be too, that this is not the case for the Hawkeye State!

Iowa's Drunkest Counties Will Surprise You

For this, I used data mined by the folks at IntoxiStates. They used CDC data and put everything together.

First off, the study found that 23.12% of all Iowa residents are excessive drinkers. This makes us one of the drunkest in the U.S. More on that later.

The study finds Iowa's drunkest county to be smack in the middle of the state...

Dallas County, Iowa, is not terribly remote. It's close to Polk County, where Des Moines is, and has a population of almost 100,000. It's one of Iowa's fastest growing counties, too.

The study finds that 24.05% of residents are excessive drinkers.

Iowa's next drunkest county is...

Like Dallas, Story is close to Polk; in Story County, 23.97% of residents are excessive alcohol drinkers.

In Eastern Iowa, Buchanan, Linn and Johnson counties are also higher than the state average for excessive drinking. All hover in the 22% range.

Iowa is one of the drunkest states overall, according to the study. Not a great thing to be known for.

Only Two States are Drunker

Wisconsin is America's drunkest state, according to the study, while Montana is also slightly drunker than Iowa.

We come in at number 3, with North Dakota a very close number 4.
