Ho ho ho, it's the holiday season! With Christmas just days away as I write this, you may be wondering... what grocery option will I have on the day itself?

The answer is... not a whole lot. Really. Hardly any. So, if you need a last-minute side dish on Christmas, or some beer or whatever, you'll have very limited options.

While in the past Thanksgiving had been a holiday that many stores considered less sacred, this has changed, Christmas has always been that day when most retailers are closed.

And that's not changing in 2024.

Grocery Stores in Iowa: What's Happening on Christmas?

The short answer to "Is X open on Christmas" is more than likely... nope.

The Des Moines Register reports the following chains are all closed on Christmas, though almost all have at least limited hours on Christmas Eve.

  • Aldi
  • Costco
  • Sam's Club
  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Natural Grocers
  • Trader Joe's
  • Whole Foods (there's only one in Iowa and it's in West Des Moines)

There you have it. No major grocery options will be available on Christmas, December 25. That said, you still do have some options.

Christmas day, your grocery options will be limited to Casey'sKwik Star & Kum & Go locations in Iowa.

The three convenience stores will be keeping all locations open, though Casey's will close at 6 pm on Christmas Eve. They will then reopen on Christmas at 10 am. The gas pumps at all three will also remain available 24/7.
