We've learned a lot of interesting laws about driving in the state of Iowa this past week. Can you legally eat and drive? Can you legally drive barefoot? Both of those answers can be found in those two articles. Here's another interesting question you've maybe never thought about while driving. Can your pet legally sit on your lap while you drive in Iowa?

Whether your pet loves rides in the car or can't stand them, (my cats) it is inevitable that you'll have to bring them in the car with you at some point in their life. Whether you're going to the vet, taking them to the dog park, going on a vacation, moving to a new house, or bringing them to a pet sitter for when you're gone, your favorite little ball of fur will wind up in your car/truck at some point.

Our family dog's name is Lola and we bring her everywhere. She just loves riding with us and slobbering all over our windows. As long as it's not too hot, my dad will bring her to the gas station, through the fast food line, to the bank, I mean he and my mother will literally bring her everywhere they can. Speaking of Lola, here she is in the cab of my dad's truck.

We've never worried about Lola jumping up into the front seat as she knows she has her own spot in the backseat but if she did and wanted to sit on the lap of the driver, would the driver be breaking the law in Iowa? If you have a smaller lap dog who wants to sit on your lap and nap on your road trip or a cat who won't stop whining in her travel crate, can they legally sit on your lap while you drive in the state of Iowa?

According to Go Pet Friendly, it is not technically illegal to drive with your pet in your lap. However, you could get a violation involving a fine for driving with an obstructed view. If you have a bigger dog, that can certainly obstruct your view.

It's better to just not risk it. It's not worth risking the lives of others, yourself, and your pets. Little Fido or Fionna will be perfectly fine in the backseat or in their traveling crate. When I've had to bring my cats in the car they won't sit still and they sit and whine the entire time so I've always just left them in the crate and hope they cry it out. Eventually, they'll get tired and stop. You'd rather be safe than sorry and cause an accident in case your pet messes with the steering wheel or does end up obstructing your view.
