4 Colors Iowans Should Avoid Wearing This Summer, Unless You Love Mosquitos
Guess what season it is?
Every summer, mosquitos make their way to us from the underworld. And every time, we're the same level of excited to see them again.
I grew up surrounded by mosquitos, in a place where no citronella candle, spray, crop duster, or remedy could make them go away.
For Iowa, statistics show more and more mosquitos are popping up. Through July 31st of last year, the mosquito totals were higher than the end-of-year counts for the last five years.
Luckily, if the spray/candles/any other desperate attempt to keep the mosquitos away aren't working, there's another thing you can try.
We're about to be spending a lot of time outside, especially around the fire at night, which stinks since mosquitos are most active at dawn and dusk. Research found that there are 4 main colors mosquitos are attracted to but there are also 4 colors that they will avoid.
Mosquitos apparently don't like the colors white, green, purple, and blue. Which is convenient since those are all summer colors anyway.
But if you're thinking about style and seasons, some colors that mosquitos do like are also summer colors. And the list is bad news for those of us who love wearing black all year.
Will whatever color we wear to the bonfire fix everything so that we don't spend half of the summer swatting mosquitos? Probably not, but it couldn't hurt to try.
