Nestled in the heart of Cascade, Iowa, Chuck and Edna’s Maid-Rite is more than just a cozy spot for a delicious Maid-Rite sandwich and a scoop of ice cream. This beloved small-town restaurant has a reputation for something far more chilling: it’s haunted.

Are there Ghosts in Cascade Iowa?

Since the restaurant first opened, employees have been experiencing eerie phenomena that have left many wondering if something otherworldly is at play.

Built on a site with a somewhat macabre history—previously home to an ambulance lot and a funeral home—Chuck and Edna’s Maid-Rite seems to have inherited some of that past’s lingering presence.  Is this a thing? I worked for a private ambulance company that was based in an old funeral home.  The funeral home still had a lot of the equipment there that made it look like a funeral could be any minute.  You know those pop-up funerals. Complete with the embalming table downstairs and a few unclaimed urns.  It was unsettling even during daytime hours which is the only time I'd be downstairs.

What kind of disturbances were they encountering?

Security cameras have captured a series of unsettling events. In the first instance, a dark shadow appears by the dishwashing station, taking on the shape of a human figure despite the well-lit environment. While skeptics might suggest it’s a mere bug on the lens, the shadow’s distinct and sizable form suggests otherwise.

In another spine-chilling moment, a stack of Styrofoam cups mysteriously slid off a shelf and hit a worker on the head, leaving everyone in the restaurant on edge.

The disturbances became so unnerving that Chuck and Edna decided to enlist the help of a ghost-hunting team. Though the specifics of their findings remain confidential, the eerie footage from the security cameras is still available for those brave enough to watch.

Chuck and Edna’s Maid-Rite stands as a reminder that even the most unassuming places can harbor mysteries and spirits from the past.  If only these myteries had a gift shop.
