A unique new donut and tea shop in Cedar Rapids will be hosting its grand opening this week! Munchi Mochi, an anime-themed cafe, will begin welcoming customers on Wednesday, March 12th.

Located by Kirkwood Community College at 37 Kirkwood Ct SW, Munchi Mochi is a small, family-owned business that was "born on the road, inspired by countless travels across the country and quick catch-ups with friends and family." The cafe's official website reads:

"Along the way, we discovered a rising trend: mochi donut shops popping up in the vibrant, tech-driven cities we visited. These spots weren’t just about great snacks—they were the perfect hangouts, offering a chill vibe without the coffee-shop buzz and a lighter, tastier twist on the classic donut.

When we thought about where we could bring this energy next, Cedar Rapids and its surrounding areas stood out. With a growing population of tech-savvy, trend-loving young people, it was the perfect place to create something new."

The new cafe will serve bob tea, candy, and mochi donuts, which can be purchased individually or by the box.

According to Wikipedia, mochi donuts are "a fusion pastry crossing traditional American-style doughnuts and Japanese mochi" (rice cakes). The taste is described as "fluffy and moist, with a satisfying chew." They also look a bit different than your typical donut. Here's a picture I took of our mochi donuts from I Love Mochi at Coral Ridge Mall last year:

Munchi Mochi has a variety of different donut flavors, including Black Sesame, Churro, Green Apple, Red Velvet, Strawberry - Lemonade, and Ube (a purple species of yam). They pair nicely with the cafe's boba tea, which is available in flavors like Brown Sugar, Coffee, Kiwi-Watermelon, Matcha, Pomegranate-Lychee, and Strawberry-Lemonade.

Munchi Mochi was originally planning to open its doors in January, but had to postpone due to unforeseen challenges. They held their soft opening the week of March 3rd, and now they're preparing for the official grand opening on the 12th! The cafe will be open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. For the latest updates, you can follow the business' Facebook page HERE.
