Iowa Winter Mystery: Where is All The Snow in Cedar Rapids?
I can't believe I'm typing these words. Everyone remember the day I asked this question. Where is all the snow this winter? Seriously, here we are over halfway through the month of January and here in Linn County, piles of snow are hard to come by! Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind seeing brown on the ground until spring, but is this lack of snow normal for an Iowa winter?
So how much snow does Cedar Rapids get on average? CurrentResults.com reports that this area of the state sees an average of just over 31 inches of snow during the winter season. However, those totals can vary greatly. Take our current month of January. CurrentResults.com reports that Januarys with the heaviest snowfall saw nearly 12 inches. Januarys with the lightest amounts see around 5 inches. So we're not out of the woods yet.
And let's not forget the month of February. CurrentResults.com reports that we often see the most snowfall during this month. But numbers don't lie. And according to WHO this winter is one for the record books already. WHO reports that in Des Moines the lack of snowfall this winter is first historically.
Due to the current path of the jetstream, WHO reports that most of the accumulating snow has fallen both north and south of Iowa this winter. For fans of winter activities like skiing and snowmobiling, the lack of snow can be a real bummer. So what are the odds that we break this trend of no snow in January? Not great. Here is the 10-day forecast from our weather partners at KCRG TV-9.
We have a month and a half of winter left to go and a lot can still change. If we get hit by multiple blizzards in February and March, just remember...it was my fault.
