Iowa Women Top Kansas, Off to Best Start in 7 Years [VIDEO]
Many basketball fans from Iowa and around the nation wondered how the Iowa women's basketball program would get along without the likes of Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, and Gabby Marshall. It turns out the answer is, just fine, thank you!
For the first time since the 2017-2018 season, the Iowa Hawkeye women are off to a 5-0 start. Megan Gustafson was just a junior that season! Hawk Central reports that Iowa was in control early and cruised to a 71-58 win over previously unbeaten Kansas. A stifling Iowa defense had the Jayhawks on their heels early as Iowa bolted out to an early 18-4 lead in the first quarter. It was never really close after that. Iowa's biggest lead was 17 and Kansas never got closer than 10 points in the second half according to Hawk Central.
Villanova transfer Lucy Olsen has been the team leader they needed her to be. She scored another 16 points and chipped in 6 assists in the win. Hawk Central reports that Hannah Stuelke had another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. All nine Hawkeyes who saw the court ended up scoring. Head coach Jan Jensen couldn't have drawn it up any better!
The only question remaining is why isn't this Iowa team ranked? Hawk Central points out that in the past four days, the Hawkeyes have handled two teams that played in last season's NCAA Tournament in Drake and Kansas. They have several more high-profile matchups coming soon. On Sunday, Iowa will host Washington State, play Rhode Island and BYU over Thanksgiving in Cancun, play a nationally televised game against Tennessee on December 7th, and then the Cy-Hawk showdown against Iowa State on December 11th according to Hawk Central.
