A restaurant located on the Coralville strip would seem like a home run. But restaurants are facing all kinds of challenges from inflation pricing to an ongoing worker shortage. The Pita Pit shut down its only Corridor location in August of last year. But the building will no longer sit vacant as a popular Iowa City food truck and restaurant will soon take its place.

The Corridor Business Journal is reporting that Marco's Grilled Cheese will soon occupy the old Pita Pit location at 517 2nd Street in Coralville. A sign on the door of the building says that the restaurant is looking at an opening sometime in 2023 and that job inquiries should be sent to the company email. Pita Pit, which has 210 locations across the country, was one of three restaurants that shut down along the Coralville Strip last year joining Old Chicago and Guild. The CBJ reports that workforce issues were a major contributor to the closings.

The Marco's story is well known, especially if you attended the University of Iowa. They got their start as a food cart on the Ped Mall serving grilled cheese sandwiches to hungry, and let's face it...hungover, college students in May of 2000. They purchased several more food carts and even opened up their first brick-and-mortar store at 117 North Linn Street in Iowa City. Their menu features items like Mexican street tacos, Italian Beef Sandwiches, French Dip, and Philly Cheese Steak. Marco's is also a gameday staple for Iowa Hawkeye football fans too!
