A Historic Racing Milestone Hits Hawkeye Downs in 2025
I remember my first race track experience. My friend Jim would complain about the race car driver down his street who worked on his car regularly. He would rev the engine all day and night.
Turns out, that was my mother’s New York Life agent, Ron. I was at Jim’s one day and heard him fire up the engine, so I walked down and introduced myself.
Ron was a colorful guy and a bit rotund. I asked how he fit in the car, because it barely looked like I could squeeze in there. He laughed and told me he had a regular driver, and that he had fit in the car 20 years earlier... for about 10 minutes.
We chatted for the better part of an hour, and before I strolled back to Jim's, he asked if I'd like to check out a dirt race, and I accepted. After that race, I attended two more and by the end of the second, that was it for me for some time. Looks like it might be time to head back to the races.
Hawkeye Downs is Having a Celebration
The Miller 100 is making a comeback at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, July 12, 2025. This race, part of the ASA Midwest Tour, is a 100-lap event that will help celebrate 100 years of racing at the speedway.
The Miller 100 has been a major event at Hawkeye Downs since 1973. The race hasn't used the Miller 100 name for about 20 years, but they're bringing it back for this special centennial year.
What Classes Will Be on the Track?
In 2025, super late models will take over the track, and there will be other racing classes, too. Plus, the centennial celebration will be packed with special events throughout the year, including dirt track races in October and a variety of fun activities to get the community involved.
