As we slowly head into the holiday season, America is looking at a butter shortage.

As stated in an article in Fox Business, the amount of butter that is sitting in storage facilities in August fell 10 percent month-over-month. This may not sound like a lot but comparing butter storage in August to August 2021, it is down 22 percent.

In August 2022, there were 282 million pounds of butter in storage, but in August 2021, that number was 362 million pounds.

And next month we start going into the holiday season where many of us will join our friends and families for a big meal.

According to a USA Today article, when you are sitting down with your plate full of food on Thanksgiving, you could be ingesting as much as 1 and 1/3 sticks of butter. Between the baked goods, mashed potatoes, dressings, and the dressing you add to your food, it can all add up.

And that estimation is just per plate.

On top of that, as we watch the supply of butter go down nationally, that means we are also seeing the price of butter rise. Fox Business says that butter prices are outpacing other food on the Consumer Price Index. The price of groceries in August rose 13.5 percent, and the cost of butter rose 24.6 percent.

So as we head to Thanksgiving and even Christmas, just be mindful that butter could be a little harder to find this year.
