Why is Iowa Restriping Interstates in Black & White Hash Marks?
Iowa roadways are ever-changing and one of the more recent modifications has left some motorists baffled.
Not long ago, black hash marks began showing up alongside the white hash marks on Iowa interstates. The reason behind this is an obvious one, safety.

What's the Reason Behind the Black & White Hash Marks on Iowa Roads?
The Black & White Hash Marks are called "Contrast Markings", these are designed to help with visibility on the road during changing weather conditions.
What we're doing with this black contrast marking, and it works really well on concrete pavement as well, because concrete is typically a little lighter, it gives you that black line. So if it's tough to see the white line in certain conditions, if it's really sunny out, and you're getting a lot of that sun in your face, that black line is gonna stand out a little better.

These black & white markings are quite common throughout the US and according to motorists, they are quite beneficial during hazardous weather. When it is wet and rainy outside the contrast markings help identify the lane. The markings are also helpful during snowy conditions.
