According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), over 5 million acres of public land in Wisconsin are open to hunting. This includes state parks, forests, and wildlife areas. Additionally, over 30,000 acres of private land are accessible through the Voluntary Public Access (VPA) program.

However, all of this land is not readily available for people with disabilities, which is why the Gun Deer Hunt For Hunters With Disabilities program began in 1992. It provides hunting opportunities for approximately 400 hunters each year, and it's made possible by the generous support of landowner sponsors.

Now, the Wisconsin DNR is reaching out to landowners as they hope to secure enough land for the 2025 event.

Now, landowners are needed to host hunters with disabilities for the 2025 Gun Deer Hunt For Hunters With Disabilities, scheduled for October 4 through October 2025.

According to the DNR, to be part of the Gun Deer Hunt For Hunters With Disabilities program, landowners must have at least 60 acres available and be able to host at least three hunters.

"This special hunt has been providing hunters with disabilities accessible opportunities to deer hunt for over 30 years," said Brooke VanHandel, DNR assistant deer and elk specialist.

VanHandel adds that it's only the willingness of landowners to partner with hunters and open their properties that makes this program possible.

Landowners who would like to participate must complete an online application by July 1, 2025. The DNR asks interested landowners to fill in all the property information fields on the application. Complete information and the application can be found through the button below.

The hunter sign-up period for 2025 will open on July 15. To be eligible for the Gun Deer Hunt For Hunters With Disabilities, hunters must possess a valid Class A, C, D, or Class B shoot from stationary vehicle permits that are issued for longer than one year.
