There's a proposal on the table to raise Iowa's cigarette tax by $1.50. The current tax on a pack of smokes is $1.36. When you compare our state to the rest of the country, Iowa has the 29th lowest cigarette tax.

According to a CBS 2 story, "Iowa spends approximately $1.28 billion in healthcare costs related to tobacco use." It's no secret, smoking is very bad for you. If the tax does go up, maybe more smokers in Iowa will decide to quit.

I was a smoker for over 15 years. Quitting was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. It wasn't easy and I still think about it every day. It's been almost three years for me being smoke free.....I've never felt better.

This new tax could bring in new revenue to the state, but are we picking on people who have an addiction? Comment below and let me know what you think.
