Every day on my way into work, I pass by a factory that sits on the Cedar River, and I wonder what they do. There's is always some sort of smell emanating from the stacks that ranges from mildly pleasant to ghastly, but there's always something a-cookin' there. My curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to do a little research.

Welcome to Ingredion.

Ingredion is the big factory that sits at 1st St SW in Cedar Rapids. According to Wikipedia:

The company turns corn, tapioca, potatoes, and other vegetables and fruits into ingredients for the food, beverage, brewing, and pharmaceutical industries and numerous industrial sectors.

The company began as Corn Products Refining Co. in 1906 refining corn starch and corn oil for Argo and Mazola respectively. Since then, the company has been through a number of mergers and revisions to become a global leader in the manufacture of ingredients.

You never know, the corn syrup that you are drinking in your soda may have been manufactured right here in your back yard.
