Authorities have released the names of the two people killed, and those of six others who were injured in a weekend shooting spree in Waterloo.

In a press release Wednesday morning, police identified the deceased as 22-year-old Da'Curious Burkett of Waterloo and 28-year-old Takeya Hogan-Camp of West Des Moines. Both victims died at the hospital following the rampage.

The incident happened Saturday around 3:15 AM at 501 W. 4th Street, a former downtown bar that’s been closed for several years. According to police, the rampage began as a gun battle between two or more people who were among an estimated 100 gathered inside the building. Authorities said some urban motorcycle clubs were using the building as an unauthorized after-hours nightclub.

Police said 10 other people were injured in the shooting spree, six of whom received treatment for gunshot-related injuries. In the press release, the victims treated for bullet wounds were identified as the following:

  • Jayvon Sanford, 28, of Waterloo (leg injury)
  • Raymond Lindsey 22, of Waterloo (leg)
  • Shontavis Keller, 31, of Waterloo (leg)
  • Davon Biddle, 21, of Waterloo (hand)
  • Natiria Whitaker, 28, of Waterloo (leg)
  • Daquaylan Smith, 24, of Rock Island, Ill. (ankle)

Authorities did not identify the other four victims who were hurt. Officials said earlier their injuries were caused by broken glass or by falling and being trampled as they tried to escape.

The shooting rampage remains under investigation. Officials said investigators continue to seek out, and speak with witnesses about the incident. Authorities want anyone who was in or near 501 W. 4th Street around 3:15 AM Saturday to contact Waterloo Police at 319-291-4340, Option 3, or Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at 855-300-TIPS (8477).
