Before hair bands were wiped out by grunge there was a Los Angeles band that burned very bright for a few incredible years. They had the hard-rock chops of alot of the rest of the guitar-riffing bands, but they were better in many ways. The 1988 and 1990 record releases from Janes' Addiction turned the rock world upside down. Very little since then has had such experimentally mind-blowing impact.

Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual hold up and will always stand the test of time. The excesses of this band made for a quick implosion. But, In the wake of that drug-addled uber ground-breaking time the group gave us a couple of gems.

I was turned on to Jane's by a friend at WSUP/Platteville. Back then, the college radio station jammed to some awsome "emerging from the underground" acts {as every college station should, right?}. "Jane Says" and "Been Caught Stealing" from those two records were the big smash hits.

The one that JA fans love the most though was an 11-minute whirlwind of awesomeness. If you don't want to watch all the hazy heroin antics of this full-length feature, cue the "Reunion w/ Flea" video to 1:16:36. Two words: Three Days.

Three Days might be my favorite song from that era. OK "might" isn't needed here. It IS my favorite.

While it wasn't the original band lineup, that's a pretty cool documentary of a band that set a new standard in hard-edged Alternative. Nine Inch Nails also arrived before Nirvana broke the floodgates wide open. You knew something was changing when you heard they and Jane's Addiction rattle off their epic jams. The commercial side followed, but they laid the groundwork.
