Did you hear the big new this past week?

The University of Iowa is extending tailgating in UI parking lots by one hour for the upcoming football season.

One whole hour! YEEEEEEEEEEES!

Oh, wait, that didn't rock your world?

It didn't impress me, either.

I have a degree from the U of I, and it actually didn't bury me in debt. For that, I'm thankful.

But when it comes to the atmosphere around Hawkeye sporting events, I'm anything but thankful. Honestly, I'm kind of ashamed.

Last year, a lot of people complained about the atmosphere at Iowa football games. Dated music, terrible promotions, and an overall feeling of apathy were some of the gripes. Hell, even assistant coach Brian Ferentz criticized the game day experience at Kinnick.

Then add in the various restrictions that have been imposed on drinking around the stadium, and you have the recipe for boredom. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for responsible drinking, and I loathe drunk imbeciles, but aren't game days supposed to be fun?

Iowa City used to be known for providing a game day experience unlike any other. We were nationally renowned for the great atmosphere. That reputation is starting to fade fast, thanks to administrative overreactions.

I think we need to start demanding more as fans. We're paying for entertainment, so why not expect the best?

Until then, enjoy that extra hour in the parking lot, folks.
