I'm asking you: Where is the best place to see live music in Iowa?

There are plenty of places to choose from -- some big, others small. Here are my top three spots:

  1. The Mill (Iowa City) -- This spot is small, historic, and has been the sight of some great performances. Opened in 1962, The Mill features live music almost every night of the week. There's a nice variety of local and national acts. I'll be a regular at The Mill in November, catching sets from The Bright Light Social Hour and Small Black.
  2. Codfish Hollow (Maquoketa) -- If you've never listened to live music in a barn, you're missing out. This spot is off the beaten path, but it's nationally known. Acts like Dawes, Local Natives, and Catfish and the Bottlemen have filled the barn with music. Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats have also played here, and will again on Halloween night.
  3. Gabe's (Iowa City) -- Variety is the name of the game here. I've seen everything from electronic to folk at this spot. The crowd is always interesting and the drinks are always stiff. If you go to a show any time between the months of May and September, be prepared to sweat a couple pounds away -- the upstairs venue becomes an absolute sweat box.

I'm just scratching the surface of music venues in Iowa. Let me know what you think. What is the best live music venue in Iowa?
