My Best 5: 2014 singles...

Foo Fighters "Something From Nothing." Sonic Highways was the most anticipated record/documentary of the year. It did not disappoint. Dave Grohl has had the white-hot spotlight beaming down on he and his band for most of 2014. They deserve it.

The U.K. duo Royal Blood burst on to the scene this year and owned the charts. "Figure It Out" is just one of several superb tracks on their new record. The track starts with the lines "Nothing Here To See..." In reality, there's ALOT to see and hear. These guys have a great future. If you saw them at the Blue Moose/Iowa City, savor it. You'll probably never have another chance to go clubbing with Royal Blood.

Sometimes you just have to see the video to get the full song experience. Meg Myers' video for "Desire" is in that category. This 28-year-old Tenneseean brings it on stage and in studio.

The new Weezer record "Everything Will Be Alright In the End" brought the band roaring back with some killer tracks. "Back To the Shack" had the "hookiest" vibe of the year. This song takes you right back to 1994 with a two-decade romp to their heyday, one that I think is still in progress. (With a lightning bolt strap on the Strat, how can you go wrong?)

My Best 5 list is topped off by another act that made it's way into Iowa City for a couple of Blue Moose shows this year. Yelawolf is a versatile cat. He's joined forces with Travis Barker of Blink-182, Ed Sheeran and has had some reality show appearances in addition to his production and stage work. The video for "Till It's Gone" (released in October) is raw and real.

I think 2015 will be just as good for new music, led by a new release from Incubus. Let me know your faves @sharkchat and shark@krna.com.
