Several Kernels Earn Honors As Cedar Rapids Gets Ready For The Playoffs

The Cedar Rapids Kernels eased past Clinton Monday by the score of 12-2. Cedar Rapids finished up a stellar season and can now focus on a playoff run that will begin this week.

Several Kernels wrapped up some individual honors too. Zander Wiel homered twice and drove in seven runs Monday. That effort helped Wiel clinch the RBI title in the midwest league with 86 runs driven in. His 19 home runs ranked second.

Meanwhile, another Kernel went on to win the Midwest League batting title. Second baseman Luis Arraez hit a sparkling .347 for the Kernels. It's the third highest season average in modern Cedar Rapids baseball history.

The Kernels finished the second half of the season 42-28 with an overall record of 78-61. The division semifinals are a best of three series. Game 2 will be in Cedar Rapids Thursday night as would a game three if necessary.
