Local Department Store Chain Announces Planned Closings

Bon-Ton Stores Inc. announced on Thursday that it plans on closing up to 40 stores through 2018. Bon-Ton is the parent company of Younkers and other department store brands across the country. Declining sales is the primary reason for the expected closings. The company has listed loses of $135 million so far in 2017.

The company, which has dual headquarters in Milwaukee and New York, didn't reveal what stores and locations would be closed. The closures would represent about one-sixth of Bon-Ton's stores nationwide.

Younkers has locations at Lindale and Westdale Malls in Cedar Rapids, Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville, Crossroads Mall in Waterloo, and other locations including Ames, Des Moines, Dubuque, and Davenport.
