A tough week for the Cedar Rapids Police Department as CBS2 News reports identified the man who was shot and killed by a Cedar Rapids police officer Monday night.

25-year-old Markell Bivins had allegedly attacked and stabbed a 25 year old woman in what appears to be a domestic disturbance. She is hospitalized and expected to live.

The two cops who shot at Bivins are on administrative leave as is protocol for an incident of this nature.

A nasty situation all around, no doubt. But I would guess that the 25 year old female victim would be grateful for the cops responding and likely saving her life.

Physical violence against anyone in a town the size of Cedar Rapids is shocking enough. But the truth is, that the chilling effect it can have on citizens is just as disturbing as it is for those who live in high-crime cities like Detroit or Chicago.

Sadly, violence happens every day, and every time it does we lose a little more of our humanity. Victims can become immobilized by fear, tortured by memories of the attacks, and scarred for life. This effects not just the victim, but those closest to them. Their families, parents who become bitter, the children who may grow up paralyzed by fear.

When I come to work, I may face a crappy day, a grumpy co-worker, or a broken computer. But I've never have to put my life on the line while performing my job. Our police and firefighters do that every day they go to work. Which is why I respect them and try to always let that show when dealing with them.

Thank you, CR Police. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
