I listen to a lot of music on our airwaves. Our catalog of songs grows almost daily with new additions. Through all of it, one song has always been my favorite since I started with the station:

"Nutshell," by Alice in Chains.

The song was included on the band's critically acclaimed EP, Jar of Flies, released in 1994. Though never released as a single, "Nutshell" quickly became one of AIC's most popular songs. It's not hard to understand why. If Layne Staley's vocals don't give you chills, Jerry Cantrell's guitar playing should. It's one of the most unique songs from the band's catalog and also, in my opinion, the most beautiful.

The song's legacy was firmly cemented when the band performed it as the opener for their 1996 MTV Unplugged appearance. The performance was one of the last public appearances by Staley, who died in 2002 after years of drug abuse. Staley looked visibly frail during the show, but delivered one of the most memorable performances in the show's history.

It's a classic performance of a terrific song from a groundbreaking band. Enjoy.
