A new mother and her month-old infant are the latest victims of a fireworks mishap that left them both seriously injured in Swisher on Saturday night.

The injuries come at a time when local communities are reconsidering their decisions to allow the use of fireworks in their towns, in the wake of new state law that allows the sale of fireworks in Iowa.

CBS2 News reported that 36-year-old Margaret Limkemann was watching fireworks at 1455 Curtis Bridge Road NE in Swisher on Saturday night, and while holding her infant daughter, a launched projectile got misdirected, hit her and then exploded.

The Gazette reported that the mother tried to protect the child before the explosion, but both suffered multiple injuries and had to be taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals to be treated for their injuries..

According to a Go Fund Me page set up for the victims, the baby  Aria suffered a broken femur, multiple fractures and burns.

The owners of the property was ticketed for failure to have a firework permit in violation of the Johnson County ordinance.
