Mercy Hospital Iowa City will reportedly cut 115 jobs as the facility continues to struggle with financial difficulties. 65 people are expected to be laid off or have the hours reduced as of today.

Shane Cerone, the interim CEO of Mercy Iowa City made the announcement on Monday evening. Along with the 65 full and part-time employees who will be laid off or have their hours reduced, another 50 positions will not be filled after retirement or other attrition. The cuts will be made at the main hospital and not at Mercy clinics. Most of the employees affected will be administrative and support personnel. Mercy announced that employees will be retained based on seniority.

As of this April, Mercy Iowa City employed nearly 1,440 people, so the layoff will affect about 8% of the current workforce.
