Marilyn Manson may be working on new music, but before a new album arrives he’s taking the opportunity to work in multiple facets of television. His latest venture finds him working with composer Tyler Bates to create the music heard over the opening titles of the new WGN America series, ‘Salem.’
Given that the series is about witches, Manson’s penchant for the macabre seems like a perfect fit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Manson and Bates worked on a song titled ‘Cupid Carries a Gun,’ which will be heard at the beginning of the series opening credits (seen above) starting with the April 27 episode.
Manson stated, “The song ‘Cupid Carries a Gun’ was the last track we just finished for my new album. The occult and witchcraft [are] so often used in cinema with a heinous disregard for even researching its origins. However, I liked the themes of ‘Salem.’ It looks at the witch trials without being cliché like most modern films.”
Bates added, “Manson and I wrote a draft of ‘Cupid Carries a Gun’ shortly before I began working on the score for ‘Salem.’ A couple weeks later I saw the title sequence and the song immediately came to mind. I showed it to Manson for fun more than anything, and it inspired us to finish the song that night. The next day I played it for Brannon Braga and he said that ‘Cupid Carries a Gun’ was the perfect tone and attitude for the show’s main titles.”
In addition to ‘Salem,’ Manson recently contributed music for the upcoming season of FX’s ‘Sons of Anarchy.’ Show creator Kurt Sutter also revealed that Manson would make a guest appearance in the upcoming season.
Manson’s other credits include a guest stint on Showtime’s ‘Californication,’ the Sundance Channel’s ‘Wrong Cops,’ HBO’s ‘Eastbound & Down‘ and he lent his voice to a character on ABC’s ‘Once Upon a Time.’
