Is the problem fireworks being legal? Or is it the people buying and setting off the fireworks? An 18-year-old was arrested after throwing a firework into the Anamosa Wal-Mart store on Sunday.

According to police in Anamosa, Owen Michael Moore threw the explosive into the store because of a dare. Wow. A dare. Perhaps his parents never recited the phrase, "if everyone else jumped off a cliff would you jump too?" Did he think there would be no consequences to this? Not only were his actions foolish, but two employees of the store were injured! One was actually hospitalized with hearing loss!

People are going to point to this story and others like it as a reason to outlaw fireworks in Iowa. And perhaps one reason there seem to be so many problems this year are the increased availability of the product. But I've stated many times in the past that even when fireworks were illegal, I had no problem getting them. I brought them back to Iowa, shot them off and faced to repercussions.

Sadly, laws that outlaw things like fireworks appear to be increasingly necessary. It seems like we have to try and save some people from themselves. I hate the fact that that has to ruin the fun for the rest of us law abiding citizens who are following the rules.
