Officials with the state of Iowa are warning residents that Iowa tax refunds will likely be delayed again in 2018.

The Des Moines Register reports that the Iowa Department of Revenue says that the delay is the result of the department's efforts at preventing fraud. Iowans were told the same thing earlier this spring that their refunds would be delayed to help prevent identity theft and fraud. But the Register found another reason. The state didn't have enough money to pay out the refunds at the same pace of previous years.

The state says delaying refunds stopped over 10,000 erroneous refunds from being processed this year, for more than $17 million dollars.
