In anticipation of the weed-smoking holiday, April 20 or 4/20 there will be more police patrolling Iowa's streets and highways. Haven't heard about 420? More on that in a minute.

Starting April 19, police across Iowa will boost patrols in hopes of keeping drug-impaired drives off the road, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

It's part of a joint effort from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) to lower the potential for traffic fatalities.

The agencies are sending a message that drug-impaired driving of any kind is dangerous and illegal and that you can expect to see extra enforcement between April 19th and April 22nd to combat impaired driving.

Police have this advice for not only 4/20, but all year-round.

  • If you have used an impairing substance such as marijuana, do not drive. Passengers should never ride with an impaired driver.
  • If you think a driver may be impaired, do not get in the car.
  • If you are drug-impaired, pass the keys to a sober driver who can safely drive to the destination. It is never okay to drive while impaired by any substance.
  • Do you have a friend who is about to drive while impaired by drugs? Take the keys away and arrange to get them home safely. Don’t worry about offending someone — they’ll thank you later.

I think we can all agree we want impaired drivers to stay off the roads. It seems like a bit of overkill if you ask me. I don't know many pot-smokers who get blazed at home then decide they need to pop in the car and run around town. The whole idea of 420 is to relax, chill and wait....what?...um, yea....relax and chill.

In case you might not know, 4/20 is, in short, a holiday celebrating marijuana which usually involves 'puffing back' on that day.

420 was the California police or penal code for marijuana, but there’s no evidence to support that's where or how the 'holiday' originated. It could also be the time of day smokers decide to smoke and chill.
