Police in Burlington have arrested 29-year-old Garret Selters in the killing of his 56-year-old mom, Linda.

According to The Hawkeye, Linda called 911 at around 10:30 Tuesday morning. She told dispatchers she was calling because of an "episode" involving her son. She also said her son was being aggressive, had schizophrenia, and she needed help.

When Burlington police officers arrived, Garret was in the front yard. Court documents show "He was highly upset and was pacing back and forth. He spontaneously stated (multiple times) that 'I just killed my mom.' He also advised police that he had been hearing voices telling him to kill his mother."

Linda Selters was found in the home, with heavy bleeding from the back of her head. A damaged brown and black Les Paul electric guitar was recovered from the scene. A crack reportedly contained human hair. Police detectives also found a half-full jar of marijuana, a marijuana bud, and smoking pipe on a table in the home.

Linda was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she died late Tuesday evening.

Garret Selters was also taken to a West Burlington hospital Tuesday morning and was given medication to get him calm. He was later transported to the Des Moines County Jail.

Wednesday morning, during a hearing with District Associate Judge Emily Dean, Garret Selters told her, "I kept hearing girls screaming at me and I heard chainsaws. Everybody kept saying there was nobody around me saying that ... I just snapped finally.”

Selters has been charged with first-degree murder. If convicted, he'll spend the rest of his life in jail. He remains in custody in the Des Moines County Jail on a $1 million, cash only bond.
