If you own a Volkswagen, you could be in line for a nice check. The reward is actually a refund from a settlement with Volkswagen and Audi due to illegally manipulating emissions tests.

The Iowa Attorney General's Office announced that Volkswagen must pay the refund plus buy back or fix cars.

During a Tuesday news conference, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said, "It was a fraud that is really troublesome in terms of its brazenness and in the sophisticated calculation and operation that they did and the danger to the environment.”

The vehicles affected are Volkswagen Jettas, Jetta Sportwagens, Golfs, Beetles, and Passats, as well as Audi A3s from 2009 through 2015.

The companies, as part of the $15 billion settlement, must send affected vehicle owners a restitution payment. Miller says he believes those will range between $5,000 and $10,000. The amount of the payment depends on the value of the vehicle you owned in September of 2015 before the illegal activity was first reported.

This may take some time before any money is released as the settlement still requires a federal judge’s approval, according to Miller’s office.
