On Wednesday, Coralville's new sports and entertainment arena took another step toward reality.

CBS2 reports that construction is underway on the $190 million project after a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday.

The arena will seat 5,100 people and host concerts and sporting events, including the University of Iowa volleyball team's home games starting in 2020.

Dignitaries from Herky the Hawk to Senator Robert Dvorksy of Coralville were on hand for the grounbreaking.

Today is the the day that we really can't hide that Coralville pride, Dvorsky said.

The project also includes a field house, hotel, retail and museum space.Work is expected to be completed and the arena open in 2019.

It's an exciting development for all involved in Coralville, offer concert-goers and sports spectators a spacious new venue and an upgraded facility for athletes in which to practice and play. It is also expected to open at least 20 full-time job positions as well.
